Character name: Georgette Enid Malone, although she prefers to be just called Malone since she hates her forenames.
Born: 1980
Appearance: Medium height and build. Jet black hair. Usually wears loose fitting clothes made from natural material like cotton or linen, not flammable synthetic fabrics.
Skills/Abilities: A historian specialising in weird science and scientific heresy, she knows a lot about unexplained events and phenomena over the past 100 years. She's good with the general business of putting ordinary ideas together to reach extraordinary conclusions.
And she also turns into a Primord at high temperatures.
Bio: Malone is known to a lot of people interested in weird history as the author of a fairly successful biography of her great-great-grandfather, Professor Challenger. Challenger's daughter Enid had married journalist Edward "Ned" Malone in the late 1920s (see
The Land of Mist and Malone is descended from them.)
While researching the book, Malone looked through many old family relics, including an earthenware jar of green slime from Professor Challenger's attempt to drill through the crust of the Earth. The only thing Challenger had ever said publicly about this slime was the cryptic line, "We have now experienced certain phenomena in the shaft at and below the fourteen thousand-foot level" (see
When the World Screamed).
Malone allowed her curiosity to get the better of her, and she opened the jar. Some slime accidentally got spilled on her hands, and started to change. Luckily, it had been cooling for the past 60 yeas, and was now only very warm instead of boiling hot. Instead of being turned permanently into a Primord, Malone reverted to human form again, after going outside into the cold night air.
Now, whenever the temperature gets too hot, she finds herself morphing into the wild, uncontrollable primeval monster again. Her boyfriend was the only other person who knew about this, but he left her after an incident when her Primord form nearly killed him. Now she's cut herself off from all her friends and family for fear of harming or killing them.
Officially, she's researching her next book, a revisionist history of mad scientists over the past 100 years, but she's actually hoping she can use that to see if she can find out more about what's happening to her. One name that keeps popping up over and over again is "Torchwood", and now she wants to find the organisation to see what they can tell her...
