Kelpie TroubleThis is a featured page

PLOT

Upon hearing reports of a number of disappearances and cattle mutilations around a nearby small village, Megan and Zeg go to investigate.
It soon becomes clear that the villagers are hiding things and are decidedly cold towards them. Several local people and tourists have vanished recently.
Making their temporary base at a small pub called 'The Kelpie' (landlord - Angus Napier), they soon discover that the disappearances and mutilations began shortly after the opening of a new power plant (Crystal Clear Corproration) producing a source of renewable energy.
They manage to find out from a local boy (Andy Grant) working at the newsagents that the villagers have traditionally upheld a pact with a group of Kelpies. (water spirits which disguise themselves as both grey horses and young men, to lure people to their deaths in the water and devour them.) In return for the continuing protection of the Kelpies, the villagers routinely and willingly gave them some of their livestock as food.
Zeg and Megan stay overnight at the Kelpie, renting a room there. Zeg proposes to Megan, which she accepts.
The next day, whilst on their way to investigate the Crystal Clear power plant, they stop off at the newsagents only to discover that the boy they had spoken to the previous afternoon has been taken and killed by the Kelpies. They take the distraught woman (Moira Fraser) who has taken over the running of the shop with them, tranquillising her and keeping her in the SUV for further questioning and protection.
Using the cover story of being ISO auditors, Zeg and Megan take on the identities of Simon James and Miss Hunt. After being shown around the power plant by Silvie Lautens, head of PR for the plant, they can find no evidence of anything obviously untoward at the Swiss based Crystal Clear Corporation owned and run by Anton Zubriggen. Silvie makes it very clear that she is interested in Zeg. Seeing this as a good chance to further question her out with the confines of the plant, Zeg invites her to dinner that evening, much to Megan's annoyance.
Returning to the SUV, they are confronted with Kelpies. Before they can react, the remains of the woman they had left in the car are left in front of them as a warning.
On the journey back to The Kelpie, Megan begins to worry over Zeg's intentions particularly when he admits he is prepared to go to extreme lengths such as torture to get the information they seek.
That evening Megan decides to make herself scarce and take further samples from the river by the plant. Meanwhile, Zeg lulls Silvie into a false sense of security, taking her up to his room where he just stops short of sleeping with her, confronting her instead with photographs of the remains of the woman killed earlier that day. Getting no further information from Silvie, he drugs her drink before going in search of Megan, who he has been unable to contact.
Finding Megan's phone in the grass, he quickly makes his way to the Crystal Clear Corporation Power Plant, where an alarm and evacuation is currently under way. It becomes clear that the device which Anton Zubriggen has been using to create the renewable energy has gone out of control aggravated by a sudden discharge of the nearby Rift energy.
Anton and Zeg manage to break the device free of it's monitoring equipment and Zeg, using his transmat bracelet transports both himself and the device to the freezing wastes of the Antarctic, only just managing to get himself back in time before freezing to death.
It soon becomes clear that the Anton and his company had no idea that the discharge into the River Don from the object which he was using was interfering with the Kelpies, causing them to go insane and murderous. With the closure of the plant, the Kelpies choose to leave the area in respect to the villagers. Anton is offered a job with Torchwood in the hope that they can retrieve the device and continue with his research into the production of it's unique renewable energy. Unfortunately however, the device has been discovered by an Antarctic Scientific Research team...
