Artie Wilson
Arthur ‘Artie’ Wilson 1859-1912
5’ 9’’, average build, brown hair, startlingly green eyes and a babyfaced charm that made him appear younger than his years.
Born in London’s East End, Artie possesses a natural cunning rather than any great intelligence. His lack of schooling often shows in his somewhat inaccurate statements; Charles Babbage\'s voyage on the HMS Beagle and The Imperial Guard fighting with Wellington at the battle of Waterloo, being two examples of this. Artie is a great charmer with high charisma, but once people get to know him they soon realise what a low down rat he is. Artie is a congenital liar and will often lie out of force of habit, even when it is to his advantage to tell the truth. He is an excellent lock pick and there is hardly a door that he can’t open, given time. He is absolutely deadly with a knife and always carries at least seven throwing knives concealed about his person. His skill with fire arms however leaves much to be desired, for some reason the recoil always catches him by surprise.
Artie first joined Torchwood in 1880 whilst trying to keep a low profile after raping and beating up a lady’s maid, Mavis. He was under the impression that he would be sent to foreign lands where he could have his way with the native women; unfortunately this turned out not to be the case (unfortunately for Artie that is, very fortunate for the afore mentioned native women). Whilst serving with Torchwood in Edinburgh he killed for the first time, although it was in defence of a fellow Torchwood colleague — Minnie Aldridge — this was a line that once Artie had crossed he couldn’t go back. Shortly afterwards Minnie died in Artie’s arms, this had a profound effect on Artie and effected the entire course of the rest of his life. Although he wasn’t in love with Minnie — in fact he didn’t particularly like her, and if she’d died somewhere else it would have been a case of out of sight, out of mind — something about her vulnerability touched a part of Artie’s soul that he didn’t even realise that he had. He blamed Torchwood for Minnie’s death and was upset by their seeming callous indifference. He drank from Doctor Jekyll’s potion in order to get the strength necessary to extract revenge on the Torchwood team and for the rest of his life he would have occasional fits of rage accompanied by superhuman strength. His hatred of Torchwood led to him stabbing Paul in the back and was personified by Mina Harkness, who Artie regarded as an extremely evil and callous individual.
At around this time Artie had a brief liaison with Belinda James which resulted in Belinda’s pregnancy. When Artie found out about this he quickly did a runner as he was not up to the responsibilities of fatherhood.
After leaving Torchwood Artie drifted from job to job, he worked as a hit man for an East End gang, he fought in the Philippines with the Americans — this was the sort of war that Artie greatly enjoyed, a highly advanced army with modern weapons against poorly armed natives — before finally getting a job as steward aboard the RMS Titanic. Here Artie had one last chance to extract revenge on the hated Torchwood by raping Nellie and framing Zeg for it. The plan failed and Artie went down with the ship, not however before trying to kill Zeg.
A cloned version of Artie was brought back to life on Gallifrey by Selina, Empress of the North, some hundreds of years later.
